How long have you been in business?
Began in 1973 in Birmingham, MI with branch office in Ortonville, MI. Opened the Traverse City Maple Clinic branch in 1980. Sold the Birmingham Maple Clinic branch in 1997; moved the Ortonville branch clinic to Traverse City in 2000. Now The Maple Clinic of Traverse City, Inc. and The Maple Clinic, Inc. are both in Traverse City. The former is a counseling clinic and the latter is a Blue Cross Blue Shield mental health clinic. Both are in the same building: 525 South Union Street.
What is your primary product or service?
The counseling clinic (Maple Clinic of Traverse City, Inc.) is staffed mainly by social workers and psychologists.
The mental health clinic (The Maple Clinic, Inc.) is staffed by social workers, psychologists and a psychiatrist.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
The owner was in private practice in Birmingham Michigan when the Outpatient Mental Health program was initiated by Blue Cross Blue Shield. He was approached by them to open a clinic and did so in 1973.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
By being a private counseling and mental health organization relying exclusively on fees for all operating expenses.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Currently one location with a satellite agreement with a small clinic in Beulah. No current plans to expand further.
Provide detailed directions to your location
The clinics on Union Street are located at 525 South Union, between 8th and 9th Streets. Main entrance is off of Union Street and also the alley behind the building.
The satellite office in Beulah is at 425 Michigan Avenue, just North of the downtown business section.
What type of payments do you accept?
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, PPOs, and most other health insurances. Also have contracts with the State of Michigan to do special assessments of suspected abuse. Also have contracts with several Employee Assistance Programs. Also accept private payments from individuals.
Which areas do you service?
Mainly the greater Grand Traverse region. However, some clients have come from as far away as Alpena, West Branch, Muskegon, and Sault Ste. Marie, often referred by the State of Michigan or the Courts.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
John H. Vanderlind, LMSW is the Director and Administrator of the Mental health clinic; Barbara Cross is the Director of the Counseling Clinic. Kimberly Ann Cross is the Business Manager for both clinics.
What are your hours of operation?
Monday through Friday 9 AM to 6 PM and at other times by appointments.
